 Abstract:

The construction industry is the only US industry that has had a reduction in productivity over the last 40 years. The disintegration of the design and construction industries over that time has resulted in adversarial methods for building delivery that have increased costs, killed innovation, made optimization impossible, increased risk, and reduced reliability for the owner.

Only by integrating the design and construction process in a collaborative litigation-free team environment can project-centric optimization be realized. Integration seeks to create a framework in which all key team members are involved from the start to jointly determine project goals, and risk and reward are shared appropriately Sounds like a fantasy? Well, it is.

However, KL&A has been working on projects for 15 years that have ranged from “nearly integrated” to “not integrated at all” in our capacity as structural engineers, steel detailers and construction managers of over $50 million of at-risk steel construction. We know integration is possible, but it requires a departure from many long-standing paradigms.

Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) concepts can encompass Building Information Modeling (BIM) and design-build, but it is bigger than those ideas. It is a better system for delivering projects, especially those requiring high levels of sustainability, coordination, schedule performance and cost reliability. The USGBC has endorsed IPD as the critical delivery method that can deliver the highest performing sustainable projects.

Value-Added Proposition (i.e., how it benefits attendees)

  • Participants will learn the fundamentals of Integrated Project Delivery and be able to contrast them to their current practice.
  • Participants will understand the various meanings of “integrated delivery” as requested by some RFPs.
  • Participants will understand resources available for further education or exploration into IPD.
  • Participants will understand the changes that may be required of their firms in order to participate in Integrated Project Delivery.

*This course is qualified for AIA continuing education: 1.0 LU, 1.0 HSW, 1.0 SD

Speaker Bio:

Brant Lahnert, PE, has 25 years of experience in the field of structural engineering. He has a Bachelor of Science in architectural engineering (structures) and a Master of Civil Engineering (Structures) from the University of Colorado. After two years with Atkinson-Noland & Associates in Boulder, Colo., Brant went to Menlo Park, Calif. and worked for Failure Analysis Associates (now Exponent), the largest forensic engineering firm in the U.S. at the time.

While in California, Brant worked as a senior engineer investigating failures of engineering structures which included building collapses, foundation settlements, earthquake damage and other performance problems. In 1994, he moved back to Colorado and founded KL&A of Colorado (now KL&A, Inc.) with a former colleague from Failure Analysis Associates. As principal engineer, he is responsible for the analysis, design and construction review of new buildings of all material types, and evaluation and retrofit of existing structures.

Brant is registered in eight states and is a LEED Green Associate, has been engineer-of-record for more than $1 billion worth of construction, including the Aspen Music Tent, the Janus/JW Marriot complex in Cherry Creek North and, most recently, the net-zero Research Support Facility at the National Renewable Energy Lab in Golden, Colo. In 2003, Brant assumed the position and responsibilities of chief financial officer for KL&A, which has expanded over the years to four locations with 35 employees.

LCI Colorado Community of Practice

The Lean Construction Institute (LCI), a non-profit research organization, was founded in August 1997. LCI's purpose is to develop and disseminate new knowledge regarding the management of work in design, engineering and construction for capital facilities. LCI has developed the Lean Project Delivery System© (LPDS), and the Last Planner® System of production control. Lean Construction is a production management-based approach to project delivery - a new way to design and build capital facilities. Lean production management has caused a revolution in manufacturing design, supply and assembly. Applied to construction, Lean changes the way work is done throughout the delivery process. Lean Construction extends from the objectives of a lean production system - maximize value and minimize waste - to specific techniques and applies them in a new project delivery process extending from project definition through design, supply and assembly.

The Colorado Community of Practice of LCI  provides local lean support to owners, architects and designers, engineers, contractors, specialty contractors, and suppliers.  We invite owners and project delivery team members to meet together as a local user group to learn, share, and develop a lean community in Colorado. As a regional forum for conversations among practitioners, the CoP will help create a new common sense for the AEC industry as LCI continues to build knowledge in design and construction.
